Hello, my name is Britney

Another one from the archives. Your favorite Pepsi saleswoman, Britney Spears, got an early start in telemarketing. I have the proof on my answering machine.

I get home on Thursday, October 28, 1999 and hit the answering machine’s PLAY button so that damn blinking light will go away. Among the calls from Mom, friends, and the aluminum siding salesman is a message from pop-star Britney Spears. Yes, Britney Spears. I am not a fan of bubble-gum pop, so this shocks me to the core. But I listen to the message … and laugh. Then I replay the message … and laugh again. Then I play it for my wife … and she laughs.

Just so you’ll believe me when I describe the lows this pop sensation has sunk to, I digitized the message so you can laugh along with the rest of us. It’s the Real Audio link right here.

Yes, you heard it right … that’s Britney Spears plugging a new Atlanta radio station on a mass-marketing pre-recorded phone spam message. Yes, this pop diva-in-training has sunk to an even lower-low than singing pop-tripe on MTV … she’s a tele-marketer!!!

I have always thought that pop stars have to sell their souls to get famous. This is one piece of evidence in favor of my theory.
