Munich: Freebird!

I’ve been in Munich, Germany for less than 24 hours and have had two Lynyrd Skynyrd related sightings.

No, I’m not making this up.

Sighting #1 was on the tarmac at Munich International Airport. Our plane was over two hours late due to mechanical problems (a light that shouldn’t be on came on before takeoff, so they either fixed the problem or removed the bulb), but Suzan and I were just in time to see a plane from Free Bird Airlines.

Free Bird Airlines operates out of Turkey. I’m sure they are a quality operation, but they are unfortunately named after the hit song of a band who had several key members die in a plane crash. The audience can insert their own joke here.

Sighting #2 was in the men’s restroom of a very nice biergarten where our local office manager took us to dinner. The muzak channel was playing Sweet Home Alabama.

Trust me, after I get over jet lag I will spend a lot of time exploring the non-Skynyrd aspects of Munich.

There are many more non-Skynyrd aspects. In fact, I think you may have found the only two in Munich. Congratulations. I think.

I realize that as your mother I am opening myself up to criticism (not so unusual) but I happen to like “Sweet Home Alabama”. I do draw the line at flying on jinxed air planes, however! Have a happy time! Send Tom a postcard for his birthday on the 21st, please. I know he wishes we were over there.

Mom … nothing wrong with the song, it’s just a little out of place. If I was in the restroom at a Skynyrd concert, I would not expect to hear German folk music 🙂

And I thought hearing “Sweet Home” at a Formula 1 race at Indianapolis was weird.
