Today I start a journey … a journey off the well worn path of American smart phone ownership. I just bought the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus, and I’d like you to come with me as I bring it into the world.
Yes, I’m retiring my well worn Samsung Vibrant for Google’s unlocked developer phone. It’s not the latest hardware, so why waste nerd cycles on this phone?
- I want the latest Android OS without resorting to hacks & custom ROMs.
- I want a phone that works on international trips (unlocked, swap my US SIM for a local number).
- I need something faster than my old phone, but don’t yet qualify for a carrier upgrade.
- I want the option to change carriers, so I don’t want to be tied to another contract when I upgrade.
Unless I want to buy a phone overseas (skipping any warranty or return policy), the Galaxy Nexus is my best option.
For those that care, I will document my little phone project … ease of switching, problems migrating to a new device and the pitfalls of going off the two-year contract reservation.
Stay tuned for my next post:Â “Why Bother?”
