IDF: Extended Layover

Sunday, Feb 24, 2002. 11:58am. Las Vegas Airport.

My life is a series of layovers. This is the third layover I’ve hadin Las Vegas since last Wednesday. My trip to San Jose lasted eight hours, so it also felt like a layover. Even my short weekend back home was a layover, a transfer point where I get to gather food and clothing for my next voyage. I was hoping for more time with Suzan, but it didn’t happen. I did have fun hanging out with Sean and Kat, who were in town from Huntsville.

I worked a long day Friday, even though I had just come off of a red-eye flight from … you guessed it … Las Vegas. This seems to be my travel agent’s favorite point of transfer. There must be some fare specials going on here. Las Vegas isn’t a bad airport, but it’s not exactly my idea of a hub. At least it’s laptop friendly, placing data-jack enabled pay-phones within inches of power outlets.

I’m partaking in somewhat of a ritual at the moment … eating a Cactus Steak Salad at the Prickly Pear. The Prickly Pear had good food and is affordable by airport standards. It’s one of the few sit-down restaurants in Terminal D, and is a descent place to watch sports on longer layovers. I only have an hour, so I’m not eating a snail’s pace. I still have to check in for my United flight. Out travel agent always finds interesting fare specials when sending us via Vegas.

One more bite of avacado and lettuce, then it’s time to go to the gate.
